Christopher Columbus, on his hunt for gold for the glory of Spain, got lost and landed on what is now called the West Indies, enslaved its inhabitants and, due to disease, rape and slavery, annihilated most of the natives. Those locals clearly could not survive the conditions of slavery but the bullion had to be delivered to justify the expenses. Inspired by Arabs enslaving Africans, Columbus decided to import some enslaved Africans. To justify getting more of them, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain declared them as three-fifths human, cannibals, and the cursed descendants of Cain that needed to be “Christianized”. The Holy Bible was quoted to support these claims. And because Africans were deemed to be three-fifths human, and therefore not humans but rather on equal terms with animals, they were treated as such. For 400 years.
